The Explore Arts Award Portfolios
Arts Award Explore encourages children and young people to experience different art forms and artists, and develop their own creativity. Along the way they record what they've achieved and enjoyed and share it with others.
As they work through Arts Award Explore, young people build their artistic knowledge, creativity and confidence – and gain a recognised qualification in the process. They research a range of genres, creators and arts organisations, and make full use of their imagination and communication skills.

Part A
As part of their Explore Arts Award, the young people took part in a range of fine art activities, including oil pastels, watercolour painting, pencil shading, and acrylic painting. They explored different techniques and experimented with a variety of artistic mediums, gaining hands-on experience and developing their creative skills. Through these sessions, they learned about blending, layering, colour mixing, and shading, building confidence in both drawing and painting. This practical engagement allowed them to discover their individual styles while achieving new artistic skills and understanding.
Part B
For Part B of their Explore Arts Award, the children researched a chosen artist to learn about their life, artistic style, and techniques. They explored the artist’s background, key artworks, and the influence of their work within the art world. Inspired by their findings, the children created their own art pieces reflecting the style and methods of the artist, allowing them to deepen their understanding through practical application. In addition, they learned about an arts organisation—such as a gallery, museum, or community arts centre—gaining insight into how it supports artists and makes art accessible to the public. This part of the award helped broaden their awareness of the wider arts world and the people and places that contribute to it.
